The Defereggental is actually one of the most sparsely populated regions in the Austrian Alps. Holidaymakers can look forward to a virgin natural paradise, a mountain world that couldn’t be more beautiful. And what better way to discover these magnificent winter landscapes than by embarking on a cross-country skiing expedition. Defereggental greets you with a network of cross-country trails extending out for some 70 kilometers.

Now’s the perfect opportunity to set out on an adventure through pristine snow to the magical hidden places of our valley! Ski touring promises unforgettable experiences in the midst of a magical winter world. That is definitely the case, for example, as you take a ski tour to the Rote Wand and climb to 2,818 meters above sea level. Yet another highlight is the Langschneid Tour, which demands you tackle a gain of 1300 meters. The journey itself, not necessarily the destination, is what it’s all about. And that includes those breathtaking views out across the breadths of Defereggental Valley. The valley’s most impressive trails
The Defereggental’s pride & joy when it comes to XC trails is undoubtedly the alpine route on the Staller Sattel at a total length of 8.5 km. The trail begins at the Lackenstüberl in St. Jakob, leading XCers at a constant elevation of 2,000 m through the valley. Due to its level of difficulty, this route is quite a challenge, even for experienced skiers. Rookies and “Sunday” skies will probably want to stick to the Schwarzach trail and the numerous other opportunities available to you in the valley.
